Some brake pads are designed with an incorporated brake pad wear sensor and other brake pads are designed to have a separate brake pad wear sensor such as this one. The brake pad wear sensor will typically experience wear, damage, and abrasion due to the brake pad wear, hence a new replacement brake pad wear sensor is needed for new brake pad replacement.

The brake pad wear sensors are responsible for triggering an alert that your brake pads should be replaced. This warning alert comes from the brake pad warning light that will appear on the dashboard instrument cluster indicating that your brake pads should be replaced. When you replace the worn brake pads and wear sensors with the new units the warning alert light will turn off.

Typically, when this warning light is triggered your brake pads should be replaced within 500-1,000 miles. During this time period you might also experience inconsistent braking, warping of rotors, and possibly noisy or squeaking brakes.
