BW48 BorgWarner Ram 1500 Transfer Case Fluid Type

Ram started using the BorgWarner 48-11 and 48-12 transfer cases in 2019 and newer Ram 1500 4WD models. 2019 onward Ram 1500 Classic models still use the BW44 transfer case. See 'BorgWarner BW44 Ram 1500 Transfer Case Fluid Type' below for BW44 transfer case fluid information. The BW48-11 transfer case is an active or on-demand 2-speed 4WD transfer case with automatic engagement. This allows for a variable or adaptive 4WD engagement depending on what the system senses in tire traction, changing road surfaces, and different weather conditions. The adaptive BW48-11 4WD transfer case also minimizes wheel chatter while turning and driving on variating road conditions from snowy, wet, to dry surfaces.

The BW48-12 transfer case would be considered more of a standard 4WD system. This system allows for conventional part-time 4WD with on and off features and should be engaged when driving conditions are consistently slippery or off-roading.

Currently, the BW48-13 transfer case is specific to the 2021-2022 Ram 1500 TRX model. The 48-13 features a full-time 4x4 system with standard functions like 4WD Auto, 4WD Low, and 4WD High. The 4WD high and 4WD low lock all wheels to optimize slippery or offroad traction. The 4WD transfer case system also allows for a variety of settings and modes depending on driving situations or conditions.

The BW48 transfer cases were likely introduced in 2019 onward Ram 1500 models to improve reliability and heavy-duty performance. The BW48 transfer cases are designed with internal parts to accommodate higher torque loads for increased payload and heavy towing conditions.

What type of BW48 Ram 1500 transfer case fluid do I use?

Follow the manufacturers' transfer case fluid change suggestions. The owner's manual in the 2019 Ram 1500 recommends the BW 48-11 and 48-12 use a BW44 type transfer case fluid part number 68089195AA, 68049954AA, or 68049954AC for servicing and changing the transfer case fluid.

For 2019 and earlier Ram 1500 models, the question of what transfer case fluid to use is clear. Just reference your owner's manual and it tells you the Mopar transfer case fluid type or name needed for a transfer case fluid change. These recommended Mopar transfer case fluids can easily be referenced and sourced by part numbers and used accordingly.

However, for the 2020-2022 models, many may have noticed a change in the Ram 1500 owners' manual printing. The manual we found now recommends the use of two different transfer case fluid types depending on which transfer case you have in your truck. The manuals indicate the vehicle could have either a BorgWarner 48-11 or 48-12 transfer case model number.

Currently, the 2021-2022 Ram 1500 TRX doesn't reference any transfer case fluid change information, or the fluids recommended. This suggests they want you to contact the OEM parts network requesting the type of fluid needed for a transfer case fluid change.

How to confirm the correct type of Ram 1500 transfer case fluid?

Important Note Regarding Conflicting Transfer Case Fluid Information: Several OEM part lookup and vehicle fitment lists are recommending transfer case fluid part numbers 68049954AC, 68049954AA, 68089195AA for all Ram 1500 48-11, 48-12, and 48-13 transfer cases. Ram 1500 owners questioning the transfer case fluid type such as Mobil LT or Shell Spirax S2 ATF A389 fluid references should contact the dealer. Provide your dealer with your vehicle make and model along with your VIN hoping they will tell you which Mopar transfer case fluid part number you need for your vehicle.

Another option is to go to a reliable online Mopar dealer selling genuine parts and look up your vehicle to find the recommended fluid. For 2020-2022 models we can only assume they will suggest using one of these Mopar transfer case lubricant part numbers 68089195AA, 68049954AA, or 68049954AC (Note: 68049954AA has been replaced by the latest part number 68049954AC).

2020-2022 Ram 1500 using any of the above parts numbers BorgWarner 48-11 and 48-12 or BW-13 transfer cases can use RAVENOL BW44 Fluid as an improved full synthetic replacement.

Important Note Regarding Conflicting Transfer Case Fluid Information: 2020-2022 Ram 1500 owners who search their owner manual in a quest to find out what transfer case fluid to use will be prompted to confirm what transfer case is in their truck (either a 48-11 or 48-12). You can find the transfer case ID number by examining the transfer case and finding the ID label on it. You’ll then likely do an online search, for either the recommended Mobil Fluid LT or Shell Spirax S2 ATF A389 fluids only to find out these are typically only available in bulk and special-order items from oil distributors. You might also search online and find a lot of discussion on the subject only to be confused and frustrated even more by a variety of different fluid recommendations and suggestions. We always suggest using the specific fluid specifications and part number recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

Ram 1500 BorgWarner BW 44 Transfer Case

BW44 BorgWarner Ram 1500 Transfer Case Fluid Type

In the United States, the 4WD Ram 1500 started using a BorgWarner transfer case in the model year 2011. Along with this new transfer case is the new recommended Ram 1500 BW44 type transfer case fluid part numbers 68089195AA, 68049954AA, or 68049954AC. The BorgWarner transfer case fluid is a new formulation compared to the standard ATF that has been previously recommended in many older Ram 1500 4WD models. Our Transfer case fluid for the Ram BorgWarner transfer case meets part number 68089195AA, 68049954AA, and 68049954AC specifications and is specifically formulated for improved transfer case performance, longevity, and function. Unlike some other vehicle makes, it is not identified with a GL (gear lube) specification or ATF specification which is recommended for older vehicle transfer cases.

We suspect the main reason Ram chose to update to the newer BorgWarner transfer case and fluid in the Ram trucks was to improve the overall efficiency of the vehicle driveline. Using the more modern and sophisticated transfer case design improved and lowered the rolling resistance of the vehicle. The modern transfer case requires a fluid to match that design. Our RAVENOL BW44 transfer case fluid for the Ram BorgWarner transfer case is a fully synthetic, high-performance transfer case fluid that prevents lubrication breakdown and viscosity deterioration. RAVENOL BW44 specifically offers improved high-temperature fluid shear stability and improved fluid flow to key areas of the transfer case, especially for cold climate environments. The fully synthetic formulation allows for less dynamic drag inside the transfer case resulting in improved fuel economy. All these benefits result in less wear and tear on internal parts. To learn more about the benefits of using the RAVENOL BW44 Transfer Case Fluid check out the RAVENOL oils tests and comparisons.

Some may still choose to use alternative transfer case fluid options or generic ATFs for the BorgWarner 44 transfer cases even though the Ram 68089195AA, 68049954AA, or 68049954AC transfer case fluid part numbers are specified. We always suggest using a fluid that is in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations as noted in service and owners manuals. In this case, Ram specifically recommends the use of a BW44 transfer case type fluid in accordance with one of three-part numbers. 68089195AA, 68049954AA, or 68049954AC. Using the suggested fluid specification will ensure proper fluid formulation, additives, and base oils achieve the best-intended lubricating characteristics for your transfer case. This will allow for the greatest transfer case reliability, long-term performance, and the best transfer case usability and function.

When should you change your Ram 1500 center transfer case fluid? While it's always best to follow the manufacturers' recommendations, changing the fluid from around 80,000 miles to 90,000 miles should be acceptable under normal driving conditions. However, depending on your driving style the transfer case fluid could be changed more often. For example, if the vehicle sees aggressive driving, high horsepower applications (TRX models), full-time consistent 4WD engagement, off-roading, and frequent trailer pulling you should service the center transfer case fluid more often and as early as every 50,000 miles - 60,000 miles. Also, if you are using a cheaper non-synthetic name brand of fluid, you should change it more often. Abiding by recommended transfer case fluid change intervals and recommendations noted here can eliminate and minimize transfer case mechanical issues and costly repairs.

Why Should Ram 1500 Transfer Case Fluid Be Changed?

The Ram 1500 center transfer case has a considerable number of internal parts turning at high speeds. This includes bearings, sprockets, gears, gear pulleys, clutch materials, and chains. These internal parts rely solely on the transfer case fluids lubrication film strength for protection and longevity. Through use the center transfer case fluid experiences excessive shear loads and excessive heat cycles. In time these heat cycles and excessive loads can degrade and deplete the lubricating properties and film strength of the fluid found in the center transfer case. Continued use of old transfer case fluid over an extended period will result in excessive transfer case bearing, bearings, sprockets, gear pulleys, chain wear, and eventual part failure. Therefore, performing regular transfer case fluid changes is important. Changing the center transfer case fluid as regular routine maintenance will greatly extend the life of the transfer case, minimize driveline noises, poor 4WD engagement, chatter, and vibrations due to wear, and ensure the transfer case unit receives reliable clean lubrication.
