What Type of VW Transmission Fluid Does My Car Use?

When shopping for transmission fluid, many owners wonder what type of ATF their specific VW models uses. Blauparts is here to help! In the blog article, we've put together a Volkswagen transmission fluid application list to help you determine the correct VW transmission fluid part number that you will need when changing your VW transmission fluid. For those that are unsure which transmission they have; we highlight several ways that you can find out.

How To Find VW Transmission Codes?

There are a few ways to find your transmission codes and specifics. First, you'll need to locate your Vehicle Identification Label.

  1. Inside Spare Tire Well - The Vehicle Identification Label can usually be found on the well area that carries the spare tire in the trunk. The transmission code(s) are usually located on the same row as the engine code. (See Image)
  2. Owners Manual - The Vehicle Identification Label is usually attached inside the smaller Maintenance booklet on the Warranty Voucher page. The transmission code(s) are usually located on the same row as the engine code. (See Image)
  3. Factory Service Manual - You can also consult the Factory Service Manual to find out the correct recommended transmission fluid for your VW model.
  4. Your VIN - VIN (vehicle identification number). Some customers have contacted their dealer with their VIN and requested ATF information. Blauparts is an independent Audi VW parts specialist and does not have access to your bill of material info. We therefore CAN NOT tell you for certain what type your vehicle has.

What Is the Difference Between a VW Inline Mounted and a VW Transverse Mounted Transmission?

VW models came with many different transmissions. These terms (inline and transverse) can refer to either the engine or the transmission.

Most earlier VW models came equipped with an inline-mounted automatic transmission. An inline transmission is positioned in the engine compartment forward to aft (front to rear) in the body of the car. Several newer VW models came equipped with transverse mounted automatic transmissions. Transversely mounted transmissions are positioned sideways (left to right) in the body of the car.

VW Tiptronic Transmission

Around 1998 many VWs came equipped with a Tiptronic transmission. Tiptronic is the term VW uses to describe their manumatic type transmission. Automatic Tiptronic transmissions allow the driver to switch over and manually control gear selection.

DSG VW Transmission

A variety of VW models came equipped with direct shift gearbox (DSG) transmissions. Currently, VW uses a 6-speed and 7-speed transverse mounted DSG transmission. The DSG transmission features both manual and automatic modes of operation. The design yields better RPM control for a more powerful and more instantaneous shift.

* Factory Technical Service Bulletin Regarding Select Automatic Transmissions

A manufacturer's technical service bulletin (TSB) encouraged owners to come in for service to update their automatic transmission fluid and install transmission control unit (TCU) software updates. This TSB was for vehicles experiencing chirping, hooting, squeaking, light vibrations, or shudders when changing gears.

6 Speed Tiptronic ZF Automatic Transmission Models Affected:

  • 2004-2006 VW Phaeton 4.2L 40V Models

Some of the earliest TSB services may have been performed using an updated G 055 005 A2 fluid that was blue in color (replacing the original G 055 005 A2 fluid that was tan in color). Other TSB services may have been performed using the latest G 060 162 A2 transmission fluid, which is green in color. This new green G 060 162 A2 fluid has now superseded and/or replaced the older G 055 005 A2 part number.

It is the responsibility of the vehicle owner to confirm if your vehicle HAS or has NOT had the TSB performed with the updated blue or green ATF and TCU software update. To determine if your vehicle has received the TSB follow the five steps provided:

  1. Determine your ATF fluid color. Is it tan, blue, or green? There is sometimes confusion regarding the apparent color of the transmission fluid in your vehicle. If it appears blue or green in color it can be filled or mixed with the latest G 060 162 A2. However, if it appears to be tan, the update has likely not been performed and should only be filled using VW G 055 005 A2.
  2. Contact the local dealer and using your VIN obtain the official service history records for your vehicle and confirm that the TSB was performed and what type of transmission fluid was used.
  3. Determine your transmission code. This can be located on the transmission identification plate, owner's manual, and vehicle identification label located in the well area that carries the spare tire. Using your transmission code and VIN - contact the local dealership to confirm if your model transmission is eligible for the updated ATF fluid and TCU update.
