75W90 Ram 1500 Rear Differential Fluid Type
The following rear differential fluid information applies to the 2017 and newer Ram 1500 models. The Ram 1500 models started recommending SAE 75W90 GL5 gear oil for use in the rear differentials in the model year 2017. This is known as gear oil quality specification MS-A0160 or part number 68340460AA.
Some may still choose to use alternative viscosity gear oils in the Ram 1500 rear differential even though a 75W90 GL5 gear oil is specified for the 2017-2022 Ram 1500 rear differential. This is a risky decision. We always suggest using differential gear oil according to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations, as noted in the service and owner's manuals. This will ensure the best rear differential function. The suggested gear oil viscosity and spec formulation will ensure the correct rear differential lubricating characteristics are met for the intended differential designed functions. Also, you can expect to achieve the best performance results and long-term reliability for all internal rear differential components. Ram also recommends that 5 ounces of limited-slip friction modifier be added to the rear differentials for models with limited-slip differentials. This limited-slip additive is known as specification MS-10111 and part numbers 4318060AD, 4318060AB, 4318060AC, 4318060AS, and 4318060BS. For convenience, we offer the RAVENOL 75W90 LS gear oil (part number J1C1169-001-999). This is formulated for limited-slip differential applications, so no additional limited-slip additives need to be purchased and added to the rear differential.

Front Ram 1500 Differential Fluid Specification Guide
75W85 Ram 1500 Front Differential Fluid Type
The following front differential fluid information applies to the 2012 and newer Ram 1500 models. The Ram 1500 4WD models started recommending 75W85 GL5 gear oil for the front differentials in the 2012 model year. The gear oil part numbers are 68210057AA and 68210057AB. Currently (as of 2022), this is still the recommended gear oil specification for the front differentials in the Ram 1500 models.
The main reason Ram updated to a 75W85 front differential fluid was to improve or optimize the efficiency of the vehicle. By using a slightly lighter 75W85 gear oil (vs. the 75W90), there is less dynamic drag inside the front differential, reducing the vehicle's rolling resistance and resulting in improved fuel economy. The Ram 75W85 gear oil also offers a better flow of gear oil lubrication to critical areas of the front differential, especially during initial differential 4WD rotation and engagement. It also supplies better cold-climate lubrication while maintaining high-load shear stability.
Some may still choose alternative front differential gear oil viscosity options or general multi-application gear oils, even though a high-quality 75W85 gear oil is specified. We always suggest using a fluid in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations, as noted in service and owner manuals. Using the recommended gear oil SAE 75W85 viscosity with GL5 specification formulation will ensure intended differential designed functions are achieved with the best performance. Using the correct viscosity will also provide the best possible lubricating characteristics for the internal front differential components and will ensure long-term reliability is met. The newer Ram 1500 75W85 GL5 front differential gear oil contains a more sophisticated additive formulation using higher quality additives and more advanced fully synthetic base oils than many popular 75W90 gear oils. The high-quality level of the 75W85 GL5 front differential fluid formulation achieves the benefits of instantaneous lubrication flow to internal components in cold weather while maintaining excellent shear stability in high-load, high-temperature driving conditions.

Ram 1500 Differential Fluid Change Intervals
When should you change your Ram 1500 front and rear differential fluids? While it's always best to follow the manufacturers' recommendations, changing the fluid from around 50,000 miles to 60,000 miles should be acceptable under usual driving conditions. However, the differential gear oils could be changed more frequently depending on your driving style. For example, suppose the vehicle experiences aggressive driving, full-time/consistent 4WD engagement, off-roading, and frequent trailer pulling or is a high horsepower vehicle application (TRX models). In that case, you should service the differential fluids more frequently and as early as every 30,000 miles. Also, if you use a cheaper non-synthetic brand of fluid, you should change it more often. Following the recommended differential fluid change intervals and the recommendations noted here can eliminate and minimize mechanical issues and costly differential repairs.
Why Should Ram 1500 Differential Fluid Be Changed?
Your differential has a significant number of moving internal components. This includes bearings, pinion gears, and crown gears. These internal components rely solely on the differential fluid's lubrication film strength for protection and longevity. The differential fluid is subjected to excessive shear loads and various heat cycles through everyday driving. In time, everyday driving conditions can cause wear and tear on the fluid and deplete the differential fluid's lubricating properties and film strength. If you continue to run old differential fluid and gear oils, you will likely experience differential bearing, pinion gear wear, and other possible failures. To avoid differential failure, having regular differential fluid changes is essential. Changing the rear differential fluid as part of routine maintenance will significantly extend the life of the rear differential, minimize driveline noises, chatter, and vibrations, due to wear, and ensure the differential bearings and gears receive reliable, clean lubrication.
