Mercedes Motor Oil Types Specifications

In the late 80s to early 90s Mercedes-Benz created an engine oil quality specification system and began recommending the use of oils in their engine that met their specifications. The engine oil quality specifications and standards were put in place to ensure a higher level of quality engine oil would be used in their engines. Previously European auto manufacturers were recommending oils with API or ACEA oil specifications, which quality standards were broad and general and not as specific as the manufacturers needed them to be. Mercedes Benz oil standards are primarily meant to ensure optimal engine reliability and longevity. There are approximately 10 active Mercedes engine oil quality specifications that have been established for their range of engines going back to the mid to late 1980s. Each Mercedes oil quality specification is denoted by beginning with the letters “MB” and then followed by a four to five number sequence. The numbers signify necessary oil chemical properties and levels of performance required for the specific Mercedes engine application. In many instances, when Mercedes engines experience mechanical issues or failures, the cause of the failure is related to the prolonged use of low to mid-quality engine oils that do meet Mercedes engine oil quality levels or standards. Using the correct oil for your specific engine type, as suggested by Mercedes will offer the best possible engine performance, protection, and longevity. Below you will find a brief overview with a basic explanation of the Mercedes-Benz engine oil types and what engine applications they coincide with.

How to confirm which Mercedes oil specification is right for your engine

Always consult a service manual, or your owner's manual for your vehicle to confirm what type of specific fluids or oils are required for your Mercedes model. The recommended Mercedes oil quality standard and oil viscosity weight are specified in your owner's manual and can typically be referenced in the owner's manual index under engine oil, or operating fluids. If you have lost your owner's manual and are having difficulty determining what type of Mercedes oil to use, you may wish to refer to our BLAU® Oil Change Kits for Mercedes. Our oil change kits conveniently include the correct Mercedes oil spec, amount of oil, oil filter, and hardware for each specific model and engine type.

Mercedes MB 229.71 Oil Spec

The Mercedes-Benz MB 229.71 oil quality specification was introduced around 2016 but was not recommended for oil change services until 2019. Currently, this engine oil specification is recommended for use in small-displacement turbocharged 4 cylinder gasoline engine codes M260, M264, and M256 V6 engines from 2019 onward. It is also recommended for the new small-displacement Mercedes diesel engine fitted in small chassis models offered in other parts of the world except for the USA. The MB 229.71 oil specification is a Mid-Low SAPS (Sulfated Ash Phosphorus Sulfur) additive formulation developed for gasoline engines equipped with GPF (Gasoline Particulate Filter) and diesel engines with DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) emission systems. The engine oil is formulated to achieve improved fuel economy and extended oil change intervals. The MB 229.71 specification requires a minimum high temperature and high shear viscosity of HTHS of 2.6 to 2.9 mPa*s and TBN (Total Base Number) of 7.5 or higher in a 0W-20 viscosity. The Mercedes-Benz MB 229.71 oil standard correlates with the ACEA C5 oil specification.

The transition into Low SAPS oils now being recommended for Mercedes gasoline engines, appears to be driven in part by a new tier of stricter EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) emission standards. The new tier standards are changing gasoline engine design technologies and also requiring some gasoline engines to be equipped with modern GPF (Gasoline Particulate Filter) emission systems. The new EPA standards that have been implemented are also driving change in different gasoline formulations which are now being distributed throughout the continental United States.

Important Note: To avoid or minimize engine-related mechanical issues associated with Mercedes modern emission systems, use only high-quality engine oils which have the Mercedes-Benz MB 229.71 OEM Approval. If you find yourself drastically past your oil change interval, or you experience a low engine oil level emergency and your unable to source the MB 229.71 engine oil in your region, an oil meeting MB 229.51, MB 229.52, MB 229.61 with a viscosity grade of either SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40, 5W-40 could temporarily be used. If you cannot source an engine oil with the Mercedes approval, you could use an oil meeting ACEA C5 spec temporarily with a viscosity of SAE 0W20, 0W30, 5W30, 0W40, or 5W40. When the correct Mercedes MB 229.71 spec oil becomes available, it would be best to perform another engine oil change service as soon as reasonably possible. Remember, engine oils that have received the Mercedes Benz MB-Approval 229.71 have been tested more extensively than popular “off the shelve” oils which typically are lower in quality having a simple set of oil standards covering a broad and general range of lubrication requirements. For the absolute best engine performance, always use engine oil with the formal Mercedes-Benz MB-Approved 229.71 oil specification.

Mercedes MB 229.52 Oil Spec

The Mercedes MB 229.52 oil quality specification was introduced around 2012 in the USA. This engine oil formulation was primarily recommended for use in the Mercedes BlueTec diesel engines (engine designations OM642 3.0L and OM651 2.1L). The MB 229.52 specification is the updated version of the earlier MB 229.31 and MB 229.51 oil specifications. The latest MB 229.52 spec can be viewed as an improved oil specification and can be used in place of the older MB 229.31 and MB 229.51 oil specifications. The MB 229.52 oil specification is a Mid-Low SAPS (Mid-Low Sulfated Ash Phosphorus Sulfur) additive formulation equipped with tier 3-4 emission systems (USA) and euro 5-6 emission systems (Europe) which require DEF (Diesel Emission Fluid). Using engine oil with the Mercedes MB 229.52 approval will improve the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) emission system life expectancy. Additionally, the MB 229.52 oil formulation improves fuel economy to a greater degree over the earlier MB 229.51 and MB 229.31 specs. Additionally, MB 229.52 was engineered for extended oil change intervals and requires the oil formulation to meet a minimum high temperature, a high shear viscosity of HTHS of 3.5 mPa*s, and a TBN (Total Base Number) of 6.0 or higher. Engine oils with the MB 229.52 standard, are typically available in viscosity weights of 0W-30, 5W-30, or 5W-40 and correlate to the ACEA C3 oil specification.

MB 229.52 oil specification has continued to evolve without the actual specification number changing. The formulation refinements have been driven by recent changes in diesel and gasoline engine designs. One of the latest formulation requirements is for its use in gasoline engines. The oil must contribute to the decrease or the elimination of LSPI mid to low-speed pre-ignition issues in gasoline engines. LSPI problems have recently become more commonplace due to the new ethanol types of gasoline formulations and modern gasoline engine designs driven by EPA requirements. It is important to note, an engine that experiences prolonged LSPI issues can cause catastrophic engine failure (e.g. cracked pistons, amplified and advanced timing chain wear, etc.). Consequently, consumers must use the latest MB 229.52 oil engine oil when recommended which is formulated to minimize or eliminate LSPI in gasoline engines. The latest MB 229.52 oil specification is also engineered to improve fuel economy, provide better oil pumpability or viscosity flow, improved resistance to foaming, and more resistance to sludge oxidation.

The transition to using Low SAPS oils now being recommended for use in certain Mercedes gasoline engines is attributed to stricter EPA tier standards. New EPA standards in the United States are driving change in gasoline formulation with new fuel grades. Consequently, gasoline engine technologies need to adapt. The latest gasoline engines in the United States are being equipped with GPF (Gasoline Particulate Filter) emission systems. The MB 229.52 oil spec is now being recommended for select 2019 onward small-displacement Mercedes gasoline engines equipped with those systems. The 2.0-liter M260, M264, and 3.0-liter M256 V6 gasoline engines are examples, and we're pretty sure there will be many to follow shortly.

Important Note: The Mercedes MB 229.52 oil specification can be used as a replacement for the older MB 229.51 and MB 229.31 oil specifications. To minimize mechanical engine issues, use only engine oils having the Mercedes-Benz MB 229.52 approval and that have been recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. If you experience a low engine oil level emergency and need to top up the engine oil level, and are unable to source an MB 229.52 engine oil in your region, you could temporarily substitute with an oil meeting MB 229.51, MB 229.31, MB 228.52, MB 228.51, MB 228.31, MB 228.61 with SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade. If those MB oil specifications cannot be sourced, you could substitute a with SAE 0W-30 or 5W-30 viscosity oil meeting VW 507 00, BMW Longlife-04, Dexos2, or the ACEA C3 specification. When the correct Mercedes MB 229.52 spec oil becomes available, it would be best to perform another engine oil change service as soon as reasonably possible. Remember, 0W-30, 5W-30, or 5W-40 Low-Mid SAP engine oils that have received the formal Mercedes Benz MB 229.52 approval have been tested more extensively than popular “off the shelve” oils which typically are lower in quality having a simple set of oil standards covering a broad and general range of lubrication requirements. For the absolute best engine performance, always use engine oil with the formal Mercedes-Benz MB-Approval 229.52.

This engine oil formulation was primarily for use in the Mercedes CDI and BlueTec diesel engines (OM642 3.0L diesel). The MB 229.51 specification is the updated version of the MB 229.31 oil specification and can be used as an improved oil in place of the older MB 229.31 specification. The MB 229.51 oil specification is a Mid-Low SAPS additive (Mid-Low Sulfated Ash Phosphorus Sulfur) formulation for use in diesel engines with tier 2-3 emission systems (USA) or euro 5 emission systems (Europe). MB 229.51 extends diesel particulate filter (DPF) emission system life and is designed for extended oil change intervals. The Mercedes MB 229.51 oil quality specification requires the formulation to meet a minimum high temperature, the high shear viscosity of HTHS of 3.5 mPa*s, and a TBN (Total Base Number) of 6.0 or higher with a 0W-30, 5W-30 or 5W-40 viscosity. Additionally, it requires the oil formulation to consist of a group III, or a mix of group III and IV base oils. Mercedes MB229.5 oil specification correlates to an ACEA C3 oil specification.

Beginning in 2019 the MB 229.51 oil specification also began being recommended for use in certain Mercedes gasoline engines. Recommending a low SAPS oil in modern gasoline engines is attributed to stricter EPA tier standards. New EPA standards in the United States are driving change in gasoline formulation with new fuel grades. Consequently, gasoline engine technology and designs have needed to adapt. The latest gasoline engines in the United States are being equipped with GPF (Gasoline Particulate Filter) emission systems and more complex internal engine designs. The MB 229.51 oil spec is now being recommended for select 2019 onward small-displacement Mercedes gasoline engines equipped with those systems. The 2.0-liter M260, M264, and 3.0-liter M256 V6 gasoline engines are examples and in the future were pretty sure there will be many more to follow.

The MB 229.5 will offer improvements in reduced engine wear, lower piston carbon deposits, less oil oxidation, improved fuel economy, reduced engine emissions, and better oil soot and sludge control. If you are unable to source an MB 229.3 engine oil in your region when low engine oil level emergencies arise, or when oil change intervals have been drastically past due. An oil meeting specifications MB 229.5, MB 229.6, or ACEA A3/B4 with a viscosity grade of SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40, 5W-40 could be used. It should also be noted that MB 229.3 oils receiving the official Mercedes Benz approval have been tested more extensively than popular “off the shelve” oils which typically are lower quality and have a simple set of oil standards covering a broad and general range of requirements.

Mercedes MB 229.1 Oil Spec

The MB 229.1 oil specification was a very early oil quality specification from Mercedes-Benz. The MB 229.1 oil specification is in the process of being phased out. Mercedes-Benz MB 229.1 oil specifications have been superseded by using MB 229.3 or MB 229.5 as a replacement. Any Engine applications recommending the use of MB 229.1 should use either an MB 229.3 or MB 229.5 spec oil.

The MB 229.1 This engine oil formulation is primarily used in Mercedes gasoline engines and many pre-emission diesel engines without a diesel particulate filter emission system or catalytic converter. The MB 229.1 oil specification is a Full SAPS additive (Full Sulphated Ash Phosphorus Sulfur) formulation and requires a minimum high temperature, high shear viscosity HTHS of 3.5 mPa*s, and a minimum TBN (Total Base Number) of 6.0. It was available in several viscosities from SAE 5W-30, 5W-50, 10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-60, 15W-40, and 20W-50. The MB 229.1 oil quality standards correlate with the European ACEA A2/B2 oil specification. The ACEA A2/B2 oil specification is currently no longer being used by ACEA. In most instances, the MB 229.1 was being recommended, it also recommends an ACEA A3/B4 specification.

Important Note: To minimize mechanical engine issues use Mercedes-Benz MB 229.1 approved oil quality specification when recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. If you are unable to source the MB 229.1 engine oil in your region when low engine oil level emergencies arise you could use an MB 229.5 or MB 229.3 oil specification with SAE 5W-40 viscosity grade as a substitute. As noted above, the MB-approved MB 229.3 and MB 229.5 oils will offer improved performance over the earlier MB 229.1 oil specification. The MB 229.3 and 229.5 oils offer improvements in reduced engine wear, reduced piston and piston ring deposits, less oil oxidation, improved fuel economy, and improved soot and sludge control over the older MB 229.1 oil specification.

  • Performance low friction semi-synthetic based oil with exclusive CleanCynto technology additive formula.
  • Quality hydrocrack and PAO base oils with good corrosion protection, cold start characteristics, and flow.
  • Good abrasion resistance, oxidation stability, and cold start characteristics.
  • Good detergent, dispersant properties for good engine cleanliness.

Mercedes MB 226.5 Oil Spec

Mercedes MB 226.5 Oil Spec is a more recent oil standard from Mercedes-Benz. This engine oil formulation is primarily used in Mercedes shared engines with Nissan, Infiniti SUV models, and European Renault gasoline engines. The MB 226.5 oil specification is a Full SAPS additive (Full Sulphated Ash Phosphorus Sulfur) formulation suitable for extended oil change intervals which requires a minimum high-temperature high shear viscosity HTHS of 3.5 mPa*s and a minimum TBN (Total Base Number) of 10.0. The required viscosities are a broad range, from SAE 0W-30, 0W-40 to 5W-30 and 5W-40. The MB 226.5 oil quality specification will also typically correlate to an ACEA A3/B4 oil specification.

Important Note: To minimize engine mechanical issues, only use engine oil that has the MB-approval 226.5 oil quality specification on the bottle label. If you find yourself drastically past due your oil change interval, or you experience a low engine oil level emergency and you're unable to source an MB 226.5 engine oil in your region, an MB 229.5 oil specification could be used as a temporary replacement in place of the MB 226.5 oil spec. When the correct Mercedes MB 226.5 spec oil becomes available, it would be best to perform another engine oil change service as soon as reasonably possible. Remember, engine oils that have received the Mercedes Benz MB 226.5 approval have been tested more extensively than “off the shelve” oils which typically are lower in quality having a simple set of oil standards covering a broad and general range of lubrication requirements.
