Was I Sent the Wrong Oil Filter?
Some customers may mistakenly believe they were sent the wrong oil filter. It's possible that some immediately see visual differences when taking the oil filter out of the box and think "this isn't the correct oil filter."
Common Visual Differences and Customer Concerns:
- The oil filter end cap looks different than the one removed from the vehicle.
- The oil filter doesn't look like it fits my engine or model.
- The oil filter will not fit into the oil filter housing.
However, the following should be considered and confirmed, before assuming that the wrong filter has been sent. This short blog article will cover the following information.
- The visual differences between the Original Equipment oil filter and MAHLE OX oil filter designs.
- Why MAHLE OX oil filters with fleece end cap designs perform better than the OEM filter you removed or other Aftermarket oil filters you may have used.
- How to correctly install the MAHLE OX oil filters with fleece end cap design on the engine oil filter housing.
What Makes It Improved?
MAHLE OX type oil filters use an improved heavy-duty felt end cap media material that serves three beneficial purposes:
- Once compressed the felt end cap media serves as an improved seal because its tight design (tighter than OEM) optimizes and directs more oil to flow through the main filter media. Most glued oil filter end caps (like OEM and other aftermarket filters) can distort once installed and can allow oil to bypass the filter media.
- The end cap also serves as an additional filtration media seal. This improved design is better than the OEM and Aftermarket since it adds more media surface area to filter and absorb oil contaminants.
- The Improved design also minimizes the use of plastics for more environmentally friendly product disposal.
Installation Tips
Some incorrectly think that the oil filter cannot fit into the plastic filter housing. However, this isn't the case. As mentioned above, it will be a tighter fit. Which provides a better seal and does not allow oil to bypass the filter like other filters. Also, the material is easily pliable and can be slid over the filter housing cage.
So, whether it's on the engine side of the oil filter housing or the cap side of the oil filter housing this material will allow for enough deflection to slide over the plastic filter cage housing.
Some might think it takes too much force to fit the filter in place. It does take a little more effort than the original design. However, it will fit. Apply an even and firm compression of the oil filter and oil filter housing together with your hands, in an even, straight, or parallel direction. Do not worry, it will not break anything, and it will fit correctly. During this process minimize perpendicular or angled pressure.
Also, if you are concerned with how tight the filter fits, you can apply a modest amount of engine oil to the inner area of the end cap during installation. When oiled, the felt material deflects more when being pressed together and down onto the oil filter housing cage screen. See the image showing an improved heavy-duty felt end cap oil filter installed onto the oil filter housing cage and cap. The installed oil filter example is a Mercedes-Benz 3.0L diesel oil filter.
If you are unsure or are not confident in the oil filter installation. We suggest taking the vehicle to an ASE-certified technician who specializes in your exact vehicle make and model. This will minimize mechanical installation errors.
