  • 1 oil filter (MAHLE or original)
  • 1 oil change interval tag

Ram 1500 Oil Fill Capacity

  • 2005 - 2022 Ram 1500 oil change fill capacity for the 5.7L Hemi engine is 6.6 liters (6.9 quarts).

Ram 1500 Oil Type

  • 2005 - 2022 Ram 1500 recommended oil type for use in the 5.7L Hemi engine is the FCA Chrysler MS-6395 oil quality specification.

Ram 1500 Oil Viscosity Type

  • 2005 - 2021 Ram 1500 oil weight recommended for the  5.7L Hemi engine is SAE 5W20 and should also meet FCA Chrysler MS-6395 oil quality specification.
  • 2022 Ram 1500 oil weight recommended for the 5.7L Hemi engine is SAE 0W20 and should also meet FCA Chrysler MS-6395 oil quality specification.

Ram 1500 Change Interval

  • How often should the oil be changed in the Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi? Every 10,000 miles, once a year, or when indicated via the flexible onboard computer oil life light, whichever occurs first.
  • If the truck is often under heavy loads, such as regularly pulling a trailer, commercial use, spirited driving, stop-and-go intermittent driving, and extreme temperatures, we recommend an earlier oil change interval such as 3,000 miles - 6,000 miles or every six months, whichever occurs first.

Note: The above Ram 1500 oil change interval recommendations should only be followed with oil with the recommended OEM Ram oil quality specifications. FCA Chrysler MS-6395 should be specifically listed on the datasheet or oil bottle. Also, an OEM oil filter should be used for extended 10,000-mile oil change intervals. Using engine oils labeled without the correct Ram oil specification or generic aftermarket oil filters could lead to engine mechanical breakdowns and reliability issues associated with the vehicle's emission system components.

Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi Oil Change Tools Needed

  • 13mm socket and ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Adjustable 76mm oil filter wrench or 76mm x 15 flute oil filter wrench
  • Large plastic bag
  • Waste oil drain pan container
  • Pouring funnel
  • Protective rubber gloves

Step-by-Step Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi Oil Change Instructions

How To Step 1

Begin by confirming that the engine is warm. This will allow the oil to flow more thoroughly from the Ram 1500 engine while it's being drained.

How To Step 2

Most Ram 1500 oil changes can be done on a flat-level surface without lifting the vehicle. Lifting the Ram 1500 with a floor jack, jack stands, or by an approved automotive hoist is optional when changing the oil. The truck should have enough ground clearance to access the oil pan drain plug and oil filter.

If lifting the vehicle, correctly refer to your factory owner's manual for the proper vehicle lift point locations and safety procedures.

How To Step 3

Using a 13-millimeter wrench, loosen and remove the oil pan drain plug in a counterclockwise direction. This is located on the rear backside of the Ram 1500 oil pan. As you remove the drain plug, allow the oil to drain into a suitable waste oil drain pan.

How To Step 4

As the oil is draining, clean and inspect the drain plug threads and rubber seal for imperfections. The drain plug should be replaced if the threads are damaged or imperfections exist with the built-in rubber seal.

How To Step 5

Once the oil is drained, reinstall the drain plug, threading it in a clockwise direction. Using a 13-millimeter socket and torque wrench, tighten the drain plug. In our case, we are tightening it to a 25 ft-lb torque specification.

How To Step 6

Using a rag, clean any excess oil from around the drain plug area.

How To Step 7

Find the Ram 1500 oil filter's location on the lower right passenger side of the engine above the rack and pinion steering unit. Using an oil filter wrench, begin loosening the oil filter in a counterclockwise direction until it can be loosened by hand. The best oil filter wrench access is from the front side of the engine, just above the subframe.

Before the oil filter begins draining, place a plastic bag around the Ram 1500 oil filter to catch excess oil as it drains. This oil filter bag concept will result in less clean-up. It can significantly minimize large amounts of oil dripping onto the electronic rack and pinion unit when loosening and removing the oil filter.

How To Step 8

As you continue to loosen and remove the Ram 1500 oil filter, guide the oil filter downward between the rack and pinion and differential, allowing the oil to drain into the bag and suitable waste oil drain pan.

How To Step 9

Using a clean rag, clean the oil filter sealing area from any contaminants or debris.

How To Step 10

Fill the new Ram 1500 oil filter with fresh oil to minimize a dry start, and lubricate the oil filter seal with fresh oil. This will allow the new oil filter to correctly seal and mate to the engine and aid the oil filter removal during your next Ram 1500 oil change.

How To Step 11

Begin installing the new Ram 1500 oil filter by threading it onto the engine in a clockwise direction, tightening it to a snug, hand-tight feel. Once snug, tighten the filter an additional 1/8 to 1/4 turn more by hand to fully tighten.

How To Step 12

Using a rag, clean and remove the excess oil around the oil filter and the Ram 1500 electronic rack and pinion areas. These areas should be thoroughly cleaned from any fluid residue. This will help when you look over and confirm that the oil filter area has no leaks after performing your oil change.

How To Step 13

Remove the Ram 1500 oil fill cap. Loosening it in a counterclockwise direction.

How To Step 14

Begin filling the engine with the recommended Ram 1500 SAE 5W20 viscosity (or SAE 0W20 for 2022 and newer models) and MS-6395 oil quality specification engine oil. How much oil does the Ram 1500 use? The engine oil fill capacity for Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi is 6.6 liters or 6.9 quarts.

How To Step 15

Once you've completed filling the engine with oil, reinstall the oil fill cap tightening it in a clockwise direction.

How To Step 16

Start the engine and let it idle for 20-30 seconds. This will allow the engine's oil system to pressurize, allowing you to inspect and confirm that you have no oil leaks from the Ram 1500 oil filter and drain plug areas.

How To Step 17

With the vehicle on a level surface, check the oil level reading using the engine oil dipstick. Extract the dipstick, thoroughly clean it with a rag, and re-insert it into the engine.

Once again, remove the dipstick and confirm that the oil level is in the middle of the minimum and maximum level marks. Keep in mind that oil expands and contracts. As the engine reaches full operating temperature, the Ram 1500 oil fill capacity of 6.6 liters (6.9 quarts) will be at the maximum level mark on the engine oil dipstick.

How To Step 18

Dispose waste oil responsibly by taking it to a certified recycling collection center.

Note: It is good to note in your records the current mileage at the time of your front differential fluid change and when you might want to change it next. We also recommend that you keep detailed service records to track your vehicle's condition. Keeping good vehicle maintenance records can help improve your vehicle's resale value.
