Toyota Tundra Engine Oil Type for V8 Engines
- 2007-2021 Toyota Tundra oil type is ILSAC GF-5 oil quality specification. See viscosity type below for additional information.
- The ILSAC GF-5 oil specification is the correct recommended oil quality level for these Toyota engines. However, some individuals prefer to use the newer ILSAC GF-6 oil specification. ILSAC GF-6 oils are commonly recommended for the newer direct cylinder fuel injected engines. But the Tundra 5.7L and 4.6L engines are port injection engines and thus the ILSAC GF-6 oil is not required.
Toyota Tundra Oil Weight
- The recommended Toyota Tundra oil weight for 5.7L and 4.6L V8 engines is SAE 0W20. However, if Toyota SAE 0W20 oil is not available a 5W20 oil viscosity can be used (U.S. model region recommendation).
- Some older models or geographical regions outside the US may recommend the use of thicker 5W30 or 10W30 weight oils in the Toyota Tundra. However, the primary recommended oil viscosity in the US region for the 5.7L and 4.6L Toyota engines is 0W20.
Tundra Oil Change Interval
- The recommended Toyota Tundra oil change interval is 5,000 miles or every 6 months for 5.7L and 4.6L V8 engines.
- Toyota Tundra models also have a built-in ‘Maintenace Required’ light that will show up on the gauge cluster system indicating the suggested oil change is due, appearing every 5,000 miles.
- If your Toyota Tundra truck is often under heavy loads, such as regularly pulling a trailer, commercial use, spirited driving, stop-and-go intermittent driving, extreme temperatures, or excessive idle time we recommend an earlier oil change interval such as every 3,000 miles.

How to Change Toyota Tundra Oil DIY Instructions - 5.7L and 4.6L V8
Step 1
Confirm the engine is warm, which allows the oil to flow more thoroughly from the engine while it's being drained.
Step 2
Most Toyota Tundra models have enough ground clearance, to allow for the oil change to be done on a flat-level surface without lifting the vehicle.
In our case we gained access to the bottom side of the engine by using an SAE-approved automotive lift. To confirm you're lifting the Tundra correctly you can reference the factory owner’s manual for the proper vehicle lift point locations and safety procedures.
Step 3
Locate the Toyota Tundra engine oil drain plug, located on the right passenger side of the oil pan. Using a 14-millimeter socket and rachet loosen and remove the drain plug and sealing washer in a counterclockwise direction. Allow the old oil to drain into a suitable waste oil drain pan.
When performing this process, confirm that the sealing washer is removed along with the drain plug.
Step 4
Once you’ve confirmed all the oil is drained, re-install the drain plug and sealing washer, threading it in a clockwise direction. Using a 14-millimeter socket and torque wrench, tighten the drain plug. In our case we are tightening it to a 30 ft lb. torque specification.
Step 5
Using a rag, clean any excess oil from around the Toyota Tundra drain plug area.
Step 6
To gain access to the oil filter housing area, the skid plate will need to be removed. First, remove the three fasteners located across the front side of the skid plate, using a 10mm socket and rachet or Phillips screwdriver loosen and remove them in a counterclockwise direction (our vehicle in the video was missing one of the fasteners).
Then locate and familiarize yourself with the the 5 recessed skid plate mounting bolts. Two across the front side of the skid plate and three on the rear. Using a 12mm socket and rachet loosen and remove all 5 bolts in a counterclockwise direction.
As you remove the last bolt, support the rear of the skid plate while sliding it to the left diver side, allowing the two front tabs to un-hook from the front valance. Once unhooked, remove, and place the skid plate out of the oil change work area.
Step 7
The Toyota Tundra oil filter housing is located on the front left driver side of the engine just above the sway bar.
Using a 3/8 square bit or rachet loosen and remove the oil filter housing drain cover in a counterclockwise direction. Have a rag or drain pan available to catch any residual oil.
Step 8
Obtain the drain tool that was supplied with the Toyota Tundra oil filter. Install the threaded base of the tool into the filter housing, threading it in a clockwise direction to a snug hand-tight feel. Be careful not to cross the threads.
Next insert the 2nd piece of the tool with the small pin facing upward. Guide it upward until it snaps into the threaded base of the tool.
Then apply upward pressure on the 2nd inserted piece of the tool, allowing the engine oil in the filter housing to drain into a waste oil drain pan.
Step 9
Once the oil filter housing is done draining remove the Toyota Tundra oil filter tool. Loosening it in a counterclockwise direction.
Step 10
Using a 64mm 14 flute oil filter wrench, loosen and remove the oil filter housing in a counterclockwise direction, having a waste oil drain pan handy for oil drainage.
Step 11
Slide up and separate the old oil filter from the housing.
Step 12
Using a small flat head screwdriver remove the two oil filter housing sealing o-rings and thoroughly clean the Toyota Tundra oil filter housing.
Step 13
Lubricate and install the two new oil filter housing sealing O-rings. Confirm that they are seated correctly in the grooves, as originally oriented. This will ensure that they are not damaged during installation, that they seal the filter housing correctly, and aid in correct oil filter housing removal during your next Toyota Tundra oil change.
Step 14
Re-install the oil filter housing drain cap by threading it in a clockwise direction. Tighten it to a snug hand tight feel.
Step 15
Install the new Toyota Tundra oil filter by sliding it down onto the oil filter housing cap until it sits into the base. This specific oil filter design does not have a top or bottom orientation.
Step 16
Align and re-install the oil filter with housing back onto the engine by threading it in a clockwise direction. Be careful not to cross the threads while performing this step.
Using a 64mm 14 flute oil filter socket and torque wrench tighten the filter housing in a clockwise direction. We tightened it to 25 newton meter or 18 ft lb. torque specification.
Step 17
Using a 3/8 square bit and torque wrench tighten the Toyota Tundra filter housing drain cap in a clockwise direction. We tightened it to a 9 ft lb. torque specification.
Step 18
Using a rag, clean and remove the excess oil from around the oil filter area. This area should be completely cleaned from any fluid residue. This will help when later inspecting and confirming that the new Toyota Tundra oil filter does not have any leaks after performing your oil change.
Step 19
Remove the oil fill cap. Loosening it in a counterclockwise direction. Begin filling the engine with the recommended Toyota Tundra ILSAC GF-5 0W20 oil.
Step 20
Once you’ve completed filling the Toyota Tundra engine with the proper oil specification and proper amount of oil, reinstall the oil fill cap tightening it in a clockwise direction.
Step 21
Next, start the engine and let it idle for around 10 seconds. This will allow the Toyota Tundra's oil system to pressurize, giving you the opportunity to inspect and confirm that you have no oil leaks coming from the oil filter and drain plug areas.
Step 22
Once you’ve confirmed you have no leaks you can reinstall the skid plate.
First, line up and slide the two front mounting tab hooks up into the lower valence. Once hooked tip the back side upward and begin hand tightening the three 12mm hex head fasteners at the rear of the skid plate, the two on the front side, and the three fasteners on the front side of the skid plate. Last, evenly tighten all skid plate mounting hardware.
Step 23
For the final engine oil level check, make sure the truck is on a level surface. Check the Toyota Tundra oil level reading using the engine oil dipstick.
Extract the dipstick, thoroughly clean it with a rag, and re-insert it into the engine. Once again, remove the dipstick—confirming that the oil level is in the middle of the minimum and maximum level marks. Re-insert the Toyota Tundra dipstick once the oil level has been confirmed.
