A Little Extra Work!
The Audi A6, Allroad, and S4 2.7T engine involves a little more labor (vs 2.8L) due to the disassembly and assembly of the upper intercooler Y-pipes and lower drivers side intercooler to turbo pipe. The Y-pipes are located in front of the timing belt covers. The lower intercooler to turbo pipe is located on the driver's side of the engine block just below the motor mount engine bracket. This hose needs to be removed to get to the crankshaft lock pin access hole for tool 3242.
TECH TIP: When performing timing belt service for the first time, many Audi A6, Allroad, or S4 2.7T owners skip a key step to try and save time. Some choose not to install crank lock pin 3242. This tool helps to achieve 100% proper engine timing. The installation area for the crank lock pin on the 2.7T is hidden and hard to reach. It's located on the driver's side of the engine block behind the lower intercooler pipe. When skipping this important step many later realize that their engine timing is not as accurate as the factory specified. They then have to frustratingly go back to earlier steps to achieve proper timing. We highly recommend taking the extra 15-20 minutes needed to remove the lower intercooler pipe, thus allowing for easier access to the crank lock pin location. Not cutting corners, will allow for a problem-free Audi A6 timing belt service and saves time and frustration because of not having to repeat multiple sequences.

However, on modern (double overhead cam) interference Audi engines this is very risky. Special tools were designed for a reason. They maintain proper timing relationship between the camshafts and the crankshaft position. Slight variations in timing or orientation can result in catastrophic engine damage (e.g. bent valves).
This isn't the area of vehicle maintenance to cut corners or try to save time. For example, most new vehicles have tapered camshaft sprocket(s). On these Audi models, in order to achieve 100% proper cam to crankshaft timing, special tools are absolutely necessary. When the timing is off just a degree or two the check engine light could appear and a lack of performance is often noticed. Remember, you're performing a crucial maintenance repair. If done incorrectly, catastrophic engine damage will result.
