What Does Gen II (Generation II) Mean?

Gen II BLAU VW Timing Belt Replacement Kits include crucial components that are made by official OE manufacturers; the same manufacturer that made the timing belt and tensioners that were supplied on your vehicle on the assembly line. We understand that every customer's needs and budget are different. Gen II BLAU VW Timing Belt Replacement Kits are offered three different ways: a basic, enhanced, and enhanced + (plus) kit. Nothing changes regarding the O.E. quality of the parts provided, only the amount of comprehensive components included and subsequent pricing.

One important difference is that our Gen II BLAU VW Timing Belt Replacement Kits contain a pre-assembled INA timing belt BASE kit (see image/description below). The timing belt and tensioners contained in the INA branded kit are the same O.E. tensioners as those directly supplied to the O.E. automotive manufacturer. Some other reputable timing belt name brand manufacturers have released similar pre-assembled kits into the market. On the box they claim to be OE, but are in fact including non-official O.E. branded tensioner components inside their pre-boxed kits. This is not the case with our INA kits. You will find only the official O.E. manufactured timing belt and timing belt tensioner(s), the same ones that were fitted on your car from the factory.

    Original Equipment (O.E.) INA
Beginning in May 2013 Blauparts began its transition to the INA timing belt tensioners in all VW timing belt kits. Hundreds of INA part numbers were entered into our database. As of January 2014, approximately 90% of BLAU VW Timing Belt Kits include official O.E. INA VW timing belt tensioners and many kits have been fully integrated to Gen II status and include our exclusive pre-assembled INA kits.

The Added Value of Blauparts' Extras

The added value of Blauparts' extras comes from 25 years of real life hands on experience. As an independent Audi VW specialist, we created and started selling timing belt kits back in the 1990s. For years we've been performing VW timing belt replacements in our own independent service facility, on customer cars as well as our own test vehicles. We have replaced VW timing belt components on models ranging from the old Diesel Rabbits to the new Eos. We're familiar with the detailed workings (ins & outs) of VW engines. This experience has helped us create VW timing belt kits that are specific to each model, including everything you'll need to make your installation go smoothly.

We're not a big box store pushing parts and selling everything. We understand part to vehicle connection and include these extras to minimize long term maintenance costs.

Do I really need all this other stuff? Why do you include it?

Around the VW timing belt interval mileage, due to age, the integrity of many seals and o-rings are worn out or very near the end of their service life. These extras should be replaced and are most easily accessible during timing belt service. It's also common that during VW timing belt service disassembly procedure certain hardware, o-rings, or clips are damaged or compromised and aren't re-usable for reliability reasons. Having all of these items at your fingertips during this crucial repair helps ease and reduce frustration during reassembly.

We include these extras as a convenience for your technician and ultimately to save you money, possibly hundreds of dollars in the long run. Nobody enjoys the frustration of running to the auto parts store in the middle of a repair (e.g. stripped bolt), or worse finding out months after completing your VW timing belt service, that one of these related items needs to be replaced and incurring addition labor costs. It makes sense to replace these extras now when they are easily accessible with the vehicle in the service position.

A Few Examples of Typically Worn Components and Useful Extras That We Include

  • Extras in 2.8L 30V BLAU VW Timing Belt Kits

    Example 1.9 TDI

NOTE: Depending on VW application and engine type we include many other necessary and useful extras! Please find your vehicle application for specific kit contents.

Water Pump Bolts: The heads on these bolts are know to become rounded during TDI water pump removal. New hardware is included so that proper torquing specifications are achieved upon water pump reassembly, just like from the factory.

Thermostat Housing and Thermostat Housing Bolts: The original ALH TDI thermostat housing is plastic and can become brittle over time. Replacing it is most easily done during timing belt replacement and while installing a new thermostat. We also include the hardware, just in case it is damaged during removal.

OE specified 10.9 Grade Zinc Plated Serpentine Pulley Bolts (Lower Crank): The serpentine pulley on TDI engines must be removed in order to install the new VW timing belt. During the removal process it is likely that the heads of the allen bolts will become rounded due to wrenching. This makes tightening back to the specified factory torque difficult. We include the O.E. specified 10.9 grade bolts to ensure that proper torquing specifications are achieved upon reassembly, just like from the factory.

Tech Tip: Using higher grade bolts is not recommended here. Grades higher then 10.9 are more likely to shear and break off due to their inability to stretch.

EGR O-Ring Seal: Installation requires the use of the ALH camshaft locking tool. This tool rests on the valve cover gasket and cylinder head mating surface. Some of the allen bolts on the back side of the valve cover can be difficult to reach and more easily easily done with the EGR removed. Over time the material can harden and can lose it's ability to seal.

Vacuum Pump O-Ring Seal: The vacuum pump must be removed for the use of the cam timing tool. The rubber seal takes a compression set. Over time the material can lose it's ability to seal and it's good practice to replace the o-ring to prevent an oil leak after the reinstallation of the ALH vacuum pump.

Motor Mount Bolts: To install the new VW TDI timing belt the motor mount bracket must be removed. VW recommends replacing these bolts. The engine bracket stretch bolts should be replaced every time they're removed. Both the frame rail bolts and engine bracket stretch bolts that we include are the latest Genuine VW part numbers. 2 motor mount to engine bracket stretch bolts and 2 motor mount to frame rail bolts. The frame rail bolts are also included, which technically can be reused. However, we include them to ensure a reliable repair.

Injection Pump Pulley Bolts: We include these Genuine O.E. VW bolts. They should always be replaced when loosened or removed. Checking and adjusting the ALH injection pump timing is necessary after installing the new TDI ALH timing belt. You may have to loosen and rotate the injection pump sprocket to achieve correct timing.

Valve Cover Allen Bolts: During valve cover removal it's common to strip or round out a couple of these bolts. We include these very convenient bold to ensure peace of mind during reassembling.

Wheel Well Fender Skirt Sheet Metal Screws: The passenger side fender skirt must be removed during TDI VW timing belt installation. A few of these are likely missing on your car missing already so we include them for your convenience.

Loctite Anti-seize: Especially noticeable in the snow belt states is the effect of corrosive road salt. This often makes disassembly of engine components more difficult. Anti-seize will come in handy to prevent excess corrosion now and in the future.

Loctite Thread Locking Compounds: 1 Blue Medium Grade. During factory engine assembly thread locker was used on applicable hardware, timing belt tensioner bolts, and studs. We include this so you can re-create these steps, just like the factory assembly procedure.

  • Extras in 2.8L 30V BLAU VW Timing Belt Kits

    Example 2.8L 30V

NOTE: Depending on VW application and engine type we include many other necessary and useful extras! Please find your vehicle application for specific kit contents.

Coolant Temperature Sending Unit w/ O-Ring and Clip: In our service facility we've found that the typical service life of this switch is around 80,000-90,000 miles. Replacing it during VW timing belt service is wise. The 2.8L engine is in the service position and the coolant system is drained. The temperature sending unit is easily accessed in the lower radiator hose.

Snub Mount: Most VW 2.8L engines that are serviced here at Blauparts have broken snub mounts and the rubber has begun to separate. This part is easy to replace when the vehicle is in service position. A bad VW snub mount causes excess loads on the motor and transmission mounts, which eventually leads to their failure. It can also cause increased inner cv joint flex and subsequent wear.

Headlight Washer O-Ring: We want to help! We now include the headlamp washer o-ring. This o-ring is often ruined when disconnecting the headlamp washer hose, during front bumper cover removal, and while pulling the radiator valance forward. We've also outlined in detail the correct disassembly procedure in our instructions to prevent this from even happening. Blauparts is always trying to make our kits better.

OE specified 10.9 Grade Zinc Plated Serpentine Pulley Bolts (Lower Crank): We include some extra hardware in case you happen to strip one out.

Timing Belt Tool Rental Program

FAQ: Can I do it without the tools?

On older single cam VW engines it is possible to achieve general timing without the special tools. However, on modern (double overhead cam) interference VW engines this is very risky. Special tools were designed for a reason. They maintain proper timing relationship between the camshafts and the crankshaft positions. Slight variations in timing or orientation can result in catastrophic engine damage (e.g. bent valves).

This isn't the area of vehicle maintenance to cut corners or try to save time. For example, most new vehicles have tapered camshaft sprocket(s). On these VW models, in order to achieve 100% proper cam to crankshaft timing, special tools are absolutely necessary. When the timing is off just a degree or two, the check engine light could appear and a lack of performance is often noticed. Remember, you're performing a crucial maintenance repair. If done incorrectly, catastrophic engine damage will result.

FAQ: How Does Your Tool Rental Program Work?

As a courtesy and for a small fee ($75.00-$90.00), we offer the option of renting a VW Timing Belt Tool Rental Kit to customers who purchase one of our BLAU VW Timing Belt Replacement Kits.

Our VW timing belt tool rental program allows technicians to use the special tools required without the investment. For example, a set of special timing belt tools for the newer TDI engines (BEW, BRM, BHW) can cost around $800 or more.

A VW Timing Belt Tool Rental Kit can be in your possession for a total of 7 days. We add appropriate transit time to your 7 day rental. When you receive your package, your invoice and the tool kit itself will have the specified date that your tool rental kit is required back (received in our facility).

What is a tool deposit? A tool deposit is an amount of money put down at the time of tool rental to ensure the return of the tool kit and adherence to our rental policies, agreement, and procedures. This is a good faith tool deposit. The deposit amount varies depending on the actual replacement cost of tools. The refund of your deposit is given when the tool kit has been returned in complete and good condition. For more information see our Tool Rental Policy.

PLEASE NOTE: The small fee we charge doesn't even cover the costs associated with this tool rental program. We offer this as a courtesy to our customers, whom we view as friends. With this in mind, our VW Timing Belt Tool Rental Kit are not available without the purchase of a BLAU Timing Belt Replacement Kit. Purchasing a timing belt kit and tool rental kit from Blauparts with the intent of using the tools to install timing belt parts purchased elsewhere and then returning our timing belt kit is not allowed. Also, due to the complications of international laws, shipping variables, duties, taxes, and returns, tool rental kits are not available for rental outside of the contiguous 48 US states. Thank you for your understanding.

Official O.E. INA VW Timing Belt ComponentsKeys for successful VW timing belt service?

1) Using official O.E. INA components is very important. It's especially important to use the same official O.E. INA tensioner and tensioner hardware. Using the OE tensioner hardware helps to ensure that proper torquing specifications are achieved upon reassembly, just like from the factory.

VW Timing Belt Coolant Flushing2) The correct coolant and the integrity of the cooling system is paramount. During timing belt service you as the owner, need to ensure that your cooling system (i.e. antifreeze) is thoroughly flushed and clean, the same as when the vehicle was new and being taken off the production line. This is especially if you're the 2nd or 3rd owner and you cannot confirm the cooling system's integrity. The combination of chemical additives contained in VW coolant, responsible for retaining alkalinity and inhibiting corrosion within the engine's cooling system, over time becomes depleted. Similar to oil, VW coolant eventually breaks down, becomes weak, and "gets dirty." This is the perfect opportunity to make it like new!

Proper VW Timing Belt Change Procedures3) Proper Factory timing belt service procedures on every step! While DIY is great, nothing can make up for the experience of a "Factory Trained VW Technician." A technician who is qualified, experienced, and has a successful track record of timing belt repair on your specific VW engine. There are many bad or uncaring mechanics who shouldn't be working on these complex engines. Do yourself and your car a favor by taking the time to research and choose a reputable technician.

What Our Customers Say...

Blauparts Timing Belt Kit Reviews

Some Blauparts' reviews and feedback from customers regarding our timing belt kits:

"I recently placed an internet order for a timing belt kit and tool rental. Prior to placing my order, I emailed a question about your tool rental program. My question was addressed quickly and kindly. After placing my order, it was quickly shipped and delivered with in the time window promised.
After my order was delivered, I jumped into repairs and was pleasantly shocked that I didn't have to go to the local parts store for ANYTHING to complete repairs! Your timing belt kit and tool kit truly had everything I needed and nothing I didn't.
As an ASE Master Technician, I recognize and appreciate quality customer service, OE quality parts, and application specific complete repair kits. Thanks." - Brad F.

"As a manufacturing engineer who makes a living writing technical instructions and methods, I found your instructions to be outstanding. They're very well written, easy to follow, and the illustrations are far superior to any service manual I've seen. The various bulletins and warnings describing potential pitfalls not mentioned in the service manual were also extremely helpful. Although I'm an experienced mechanic licensed by the FAA, I've always been a little intimidated by the complexity of the 30 valve. Thanks for the high quality parts, tools, and customer service. I will definitely do business with Blauparts in the future. Thank you." - Geoff M.

"I just wanted to let you know that I received my Enhanced Timing Belt Kit yesterday and I'm really impressed! From the German OEM products, and the super-detailed instructions, all the way to the packaging and labeling, everything is really first rate! It's obvious that you guys really do care about the contents and the presentation of your kits, and it's appreciated! Quality products at a competitive price, shipped accurately and quickly, with responsive customer service!- What more can you ask for? You have another loyal customer. Bravo Blauparts!" - Dave W.

"I am emailing because I was extremely satisfied with my recent order! It arrived very quickly. The kit was well thought out and had everything I needed, including tools I didn't think I'd need and one I would have overlooked! With one click of the mouse I had it all... no endless searching for that hard to find part. Also, the step-by-step instructions really helped. You even indicated the fastener sizes so I could quickly load up the ratchet and 'git-er-done' fast! Finding affordable parts from a reliable source can be tricky. Your company is my go-to solution almost every time! Thanks again and I'll recommend you to anyone." - Michael O.

"I must say that your team has put together the greatest kit I have ever seen for the TDI timing belt change. I think your instructions are even better than those shown in the Bentley manual. Thanks again for your efficient service!" - David R.

"I just wanted to let you know that I was very satisfied with the timing belt kit that I obtained from your company. The parts were very well packaged, the included instructions detailed and informative, and the customer service was excellent!" - Dan

"Absolutely Superb! Thanks for creating such outstanding instructions. The Bentley manual doesn't cover anything for proper per-tensioning. Without your guide, I would have destroyed my V8. Thanks."

"Thank you for the outstanding service. The timing belt kit and tool kit arrived sooner than expected, well packaged, and complete." - David R.

Thank you so much! You made this job extremely straight forward, saved me a lot of headaches, and a lot of money!" - Matthew B.

"I just wanted to thank you for the great experience I had ordering my timing belt kit from you for my V6 ! You guys are an awesome company. I've never gotten such a great deal and experience buying auto parts as I did with you guys. Thanks again." - Thomas C.

"I was amused when your instructions mention to refer back to the Bentley service manual for detailed instructions. I found you instructions and diagrams to be far superior. Much better detail in your instructions overall." - Mark R.

"I am sure you have heard it before, but I wanted to say that the parts were great, but the instructions were ABSOLUTELY first rate. When it was time to start the motor back up, I was confident that the job had been done correctly and that it would be successful. Thanks for the great kit!" Trent S.
