The Importance of Using Recommended Vw Oil

Vw Oil Quality Standards

When changing your Vw oil it's imperative to use the proper Vw oil type for your specific engine!

Why? There has been increased requirements for vehicle manufacturers worldwide to reduce emissions, minimize their carbon footprint, and improve fuel economy. Consequently, the development of new advanced internal combustion engine designs have been engineered to meet these emission requirements and fuel mileage demands. Motor oil plays a critical, if not the most crucial role, in meeting these requirements. Volkswagen wanted very specific motor oil formulas and have their own Vw oil quality standards. 2000 - onward Vw engine designs require a motor oil that meets a specific Vw quality standard or specification.

Can I Use Non-Approved Vw Oil In My Car?

No, it's not recommended. Old petroleum-based motor oils are a thing of the past. Vw engine designs are too technologically advanced. All modern Vw engines are designed, engineered, and manufactured to exact tolerances using unique materials (alloys) to meet target performance requirements. Newer models also use advanced fuel injection systems that are lubricated using specific motor oil formulations to ensure optimal system reliability. These advanced engine and fuel injection systems must meet stringent emission requirements focusing on improving fuel economy without compromising engine performance. Therefore, exact Vw motor oil specifications were designed, are required, and should be used.

It's also important to consider that many Vw oil change intervals are 10,000 miles or higher. Vw oil must provide maximum lubrication and performance. Providing stable long-term lubrication protection for extended Vw oil change intervals can only be achieved when the designed and designated Vw motor oil quality specification is used.

Using conventional motor oil that does not meet Vw oil quality standards is very risky. Using the wrong motor oils will likely damage internal engine components, reduce fuel mileage, increase emissions, and can void applicable vehicle warranties. Consequently, it's imperative to use Vw oil that states that it has been approved or meets your corresponding Vw oil quality standards.

Approved Vw oil is key to ensuring engine reliability, optimal fuel economy, and the demands of meeting today's emission standards.
Consider the following examples:

  1. Vw 502 00 Oil Spec - Ravenol HPS Vw Oil2006-10 Vw Jetta and Vw Golf models equipped with the 2.0 Liter Turbo engine, with FSI (fuel straight injection), have a fuel pump that is driven directly off the engine camshaft and is lubricated with engine motor oil. Failing to use approved Vw motor oil in these models causes premature engine wear. Over time, a ticking noise in the engine's upper valve train area will develop. This engine ticking noise is most noticeable after the engine has warmed up to operating temperature. To avoid this problem, be sure to use the approved Vw oil type VW 502 00. Blauparts' Ravenol HPS 5W-30 oil meets Vw oil quality standard VW 502 00.

  2. Vw 505 01 TDI Oil Spec - Ravenol VPD Vw Oil 2003-2006 Vw Jetta, Vw Golf, Vw Beetle, Vw Passat TDI models with PD (Pumpe-Düse) have a very unique fuel injector system. Each fuel injector acts as both a fuel pump and a fuel injector. The engine's camshaft activates the fuel injector piston pump with a roller rocker arm and applies high mechanical loads to the camshafts. A special blend of TDI motor oil was created and is required to properly lubricate this advanced TDI (Pumpe-Düse) fuel injector system. Our Ravenol VPD TDI motor oil was specifically engineered for the Pumpe-Düse system. Ravenol's oil formulation is composed of the highest quality synthetic base stock and complimented with a special additive package that meets the demands of VW 505 01 TDI oil specifications. Blauparts' Ravenol VPD 5W-40 oil meets Vw oil quality standard VW 505 01.

  3. Vw 507 00 Oil Spec - Ravenol VMP Vw Oil2006 - on Vw Touareg TDI, 2009 - on Vw Jetta TDI, 2010 - on Vw Golf TDI models with TDI engines, equipped with what is called a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). This filter catches diesel exhaust particles in the exhaust system and burns any black soot like material, which results in very clean emissions. There is a strong possibility of increased oil consumption (burns more oil) when using non-approved Vw motor oil. Consumption of non-approved TDI motor oils can lead to premature clogging of the TDI Particulate Filter (DPF), which is very costly to replace. Many DPF reliability problems can be avoided by simply using a motor oil that meets Vw 507 00 TDI oil specifications. Blauparts' Ravenol VMP oil meets Vw oil quality standard VW 507 00.

Why Should You Use Synthetic Vw Oil

It's recommended that all Vw engines use synthetic motor oils, especially newer models (2000 - onward). Why use synthetic motor oil? There are three basic reasons to use synthetic Vw motor oils.

  1. Synthetic Vw oils provide superior cold weather oil flow. This is important and necessary when engine cranking occurs in extreme cold climates.
  2. Synthetic Vw oils have a superior high heat stability. This results in reduced burn off, shearing, and emissions.
  3. Synthetic Vw oils offer better internal engine cleanliness.

These features offer extended oil life, engine longevity, increased fuel mileage, lower emissions, and the added benefit of reduced long term vehicle maintenance costs.

Vw Oil Weight Viscosity

To determine what Vw oil weight to use in your specific model, consult your owner's manual. Using the correct Vw motor oil viscosity or weight for your geographic location, climate conditions, and driving characteristics, assures a decreased chance of mechanical failure while improving fuel economy.

Still unsure about what type of Vw motor oil viscosity or weight to use in your vehicle? Understanding a little history regarding the advancements of motor oils may help you decide.

Before automobile manufacturers began establishing their own oil quality standards (1990s), owner's manuals referenced oils per API standards and stressed using the right SAE oil viscosity depending on temperate climate. These sanctioning bodies, such as SAE (Society of American Engineers), API (American Petroleum Institute), and ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association) were responsible for establishing oil standards for motorized vehicles.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s more demanding standards surrounding environmental carbon reduction, low emissions, and maximizing fuel economy began taking hold. To comply, manufacturers began engineering advanced engines and cutting-edge synthetic motor oil formulations. Advanced oils and related oil viscosity began to play a key role in the engine's ability to meet emissions and fuel economy standards. Around this time (late 2000s) manufacturers began to establish their own unique oil quality standards rather than relying solely on API and ACEA standards to ensure the correct type of oil was being used in their engines.

Lighter synthetic oil weight, or lighter synthetic viscosity oils, have the ability to reduce internal drag inside the engine resulting in improved efficiencies (e.g. torque and horsepower). Thus, many owner manuals for later models equipped with gas engines usually reference lighter synthetic oil weight viscosity of 0w20, 0w30, or 5w30.

In the 1990s, car owners needed to be more concerned when using lighter weight viscosity oils in harsher driving conditions (e.g. hot summer conditions) because many motor oils were not fully synthetic or didn't contain necessary additives. This made oil more susceptible to premature breakdown in normal conditions and especially under extreme conditions.

Today however, lighter viscosity synthetic motor oils that meet Vw quality standards are much more advanced and contain all the necessary components to achieve higher fuel mileage, lower emissions, and protect the engine under extreme conditions (i.e. hot summer conditions). Therefore, making sure you are using a higher viscosity weight motor oil in your car is not as critical today as it was back in the 1990s.

Even with new Vw oil quality standards and the advancements of cutting-edge synthetic Vw oils, choosing the correct oil weight could be an area of concern if your vehicle is exposed to operating in unique or extreme environmental conditions and/or driving conditions (see chart). Synthetic oils are classified as high performance by the nature of their unique formulation. However, they do have limitations, intended use and the SAE oil weight classification is part of their limiting factor. As the chart shows, owners who subject their vehicle to extremes may wish to use a slightly higher or lower weight motor oil depending on the conditions.

Different oil viscosity rules and specifications are especially critical for diesel engines. The viscosity of diesel oil is typically higher than that of gasoline engines (i.e. 5w40, 15w40). Higher weight oils are needed in TDI engines due to higher combustion chamber temperatures. Higher combustion temperatures can increase engine "blow by" and oil contamination (unburned diesel fuel), resulting in the dilution of the Vw oil's viscosity.
