How To Find Out What Vw Oil Type Your Car Uses

Vw Oil Specifications

As an independent Vw service garage with over 23 years of hands-on experience, we've seen many mechanical breakdowns on vehicles. Experience has shown that changing your fluids is the single most important preventive maintenance routine you can perform to avoid vehicle breakdowns. Yet, for many Vw owners, this seems to be one of the most neglected areas of maintenance. Thoroughly flushing your fluids at the proper intervals can help your car reach 150,000 miles and beyond!

What are Vw oil quality standards and why are they important?

When changing your Vw oil it's imperative to use the proper Vw oil type for your specific engine!

Understanding a little history regarding the advancements of motor oils may help you make the right choice. Before automobile manufacturers began establishing their own oil quality standards (1990s), many owner's manuals referenced oils per API standards. These sanctioning bodies, such as SAE (Society of American Engineers), API (American Petroleum Institute), and ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association) were and are still responsible for establishing oil standards for motorized vehicles.

There has been increased requirements for vehicle manufacturers worldwide to reduce emissions, minimize their carbon footprint, and improve fuel economy. It was around the late 1990s and early 2000s that more demanding standards began taking hold.

Consequently, the development of new advanced internal combustion engine designs have been engineered to meet these emission requirements and fuel mileage demands. Motor oil plays a crucial key role in meeting these requirements. Thus, new advanced cutting-edge synthetic motor oil formulations were created. Around this time (late 2000s) manufacturers began to establish their own unique oil quality standards rather than relying solely on API and ACEA standards to ensure the correct type of oil was being used in their engines. Volkswagen wanted very specific motor oil formulas for their engines and 2000 - onward Vw models require a motor oil that meets a specific Vw quality standard or specification.

Can I use non Vw approved oils that don't meet Vw oil quality standards?

No, it's not recommended. Old petroleum-based motor oils are a thing of the past. Vw engine designs are too technologically advanced. All modern Vw engines are designed, engineered, and manufactured to exact tolerances using unique materials (alloys) to meet target performance requirements. Newer models also use advanced fuel injection systems that are lubricated using specific motor oil formulations to ensure optimal system reliability. These advanced engine and fuel injection systems must meet stringent emission requirements focusing on improving fuel economy without compromising engine performance. Therefore, exact Vw motor oil specifications were designed, are required, and should be used.

It's also important to consider that many Vw oil change intervals are 10,000 miles or higher. Vw oil must provide maximum lubrication and performance. Providing stable long-term lubrication protection for extended Vw oil change intervals can only be achieved when the designed and designated Vw motor oil quality specification is used.

Using conventional motor oil that does not meet Vw oil quality standards is very risky. Using the wrong motor oils will likely damage internal engine components, reduce fuel mileage, increase emissions, and can void applicable vehicle warranties. Consequently, it's imperative to use Vw oil that states that it has been approved or meets your corresponding Vw oil quality standards.

Approved Vw oil is key to ensuring engine reliability, optimal fuel economy, and the demands of meeting today's emission standards.
Consider the following examples:

  1. Vw 502 00 Oil Spec - Ravenol HPS Vw Oil2006-10 Vw Jetta and Vw Golf models equipped with the 2.0 Liter Turbo engine, with FSI (fuel straight injection), have a fuel pump that is driven directly off the engine camshaft and is lubricated with engine motor oil. Failing to use approved Vw motor oil in these models causes premature engine wear. Over time, a ticking noise in the engine's upper valve train area will develop. This engine ticking noise is most noticeable after the engine has warmed up to operating temperature. To avoid this problem, be sure to use the approved Vw oil type VW 502 00. Blauparts' Ravenol HPS 5W-30 oil meets Vw oil quality standard VW 502 00.

  2. Vw 505 01 TDI Oil Spec - Ravenol VPD Vw Oil 2003-2006 Vw Jetta, Vw Golf, Vw Beetle, Vw Passat TDI models with PD (Pumpe-Düse) have a very unique fuel injector system. Each fuel injector acts as both a fuel pump and a fuel injector. The engine's camshaft activates the fuel injector piston pump with a roller rocker arm and applies high mechanical loads to the camshafts. A special blend of TDI motor oil was created and is required to properly lubricate this advanced TDI (Pumpe-Düse) fuel injector system. Our Ravenol VPD TDI motor oil was specifically engineered for the Pumpe-Düse system. Ravenol's oil formulation is composed of the highest quality synthetic base stock and complimented with a special additive package that meets the demands of VW 505 01 TDI oil specifications. Blauparts' Ravenol VPD 5W-40 oil meets Vw oil quality standard VW 505 01.

  3. Vw 507 00 Oil Spec - Ravenol VMP Vw Oil2006 - on Vw Touareg TDI, 2009 - on Vw Jetta TDI, 2010 - on Vw Golf TDI models with TDI engines, equipped with what is called a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). This filter catches diesel exhaust particles in the exhaust system and burns any black soot like material, which results in very clean emissions. There is a strong possibility of increased oil consumption (burns more oil) when using non-approved Vw motor oil. Consumption of non-approved TDI motor oils can lead to premature clogging of the TDI Particulate Filter (DPF), which is very costly to replace. Many DPF reliability problems can be avoided by simply using a motor oil that meets Vw 507 00 TDI oil specifications. Blauparts' Ravenol VMP oil meets Vw oil quality standard VW 507 00.
